Hi Readers,
Well, another day in beautiful San Sebastián done and dusted.
We must be starting to tire out a little as we were very sluggish today.
The day started with our second sleep in for the trip, surely a treat!
We didn't get out of our digs until about 10.00 and had plans to hit the highest peak overlooking San Sebastián, and to get to it the easiest way is to take the funicular, which is a funny word for a funny shaped tram that goes up hills at a very steep angle.
We saw them in Lisbon too.
A funicular in Lisbon.
So after a really enjoyable walk through the city and around the beach we were at the station. Only problem was, no-one else was!! We found a note on the door and using our best translating skills we figured that it said 'Closed for repairs'. Disappointed yes, but not overly surprised as we have rocked up during their low season, so when else are they expected to do their maintenance. We were fine with it, I get more agitated when people jump the queue in a supermarket!!
The beach is a huge arc, and as we walked towards the funicular it was very cloudy and gloomy. However, as we walked back the sun came out and revealed how sensational this place must look in Summer. The walk itself was just great so there was nothing lost at all. Yes, it was disappointing to not get up to the top, but we are cool with it.
4 degrees and there were people swimming.
Overcast now, but in less than an hour the sun came out.
Looking back to where we walked.
Houses are built into the hills.
Looking out to sea.
Imagine the crowds on here in Summer.
Some random sights from San Sebastián...
The frozen veges section in the supermarket. Just bag up what you want.
A vending machine in a wall selling anything that you could buy in a pharmacy.
And speaking of buying things, we made a huge stuff up in the supermarket today.
We bought a few pieces of fruit and some veges and placed them in the plastic bags just like we do at home. However, over here you have to weigh them, price them and place the sticker on the bag in the fruit and veges section, so that when you get to the checkout they just whizz them through.
We got to the checkout with our stuff, as well as the fruit and veges and all was going well. Sort of.
The lady at the checkout was rather stern to start with, and when she got to the fruit and veges she said a few things to Jenni Spanish, so Jen just smiled back and said 'Yes'. Next minute, the lady leaves her counter, takes the fruit and veges and walks back to the fruit and veges section. It dawned on us that she was going to get them weighed and priced. Oops!!!
Add to this there was a long line of people behind us!! While she was gone we were trying to figure out what the Spanish word for 'Sorry' was, all to no avail. When she came back a few minutes later, looking very perturbed, I just said 'Sorry' to her, but she just gave me that look as if I'd just stolen her lunch!!
The next part of the day was a bit confusing to say the least. We were both trying to locate a certain place on the map, but what I thought it was ended up being completely different to what Jen knew it was. I was really proud that we were working so well together using the maps, and when we were outside the chosen place it became comical to say the least.
All the while I was under the impression that we were looking for a place to eat lunch, and my stomach was in great anticipation. As we stood outside the building I said to Jen "Is the restaurant inside this building?", to which she replied, "No, the supermarket is".
It turned out we were both looking for food, but on different levels!!
Not all was lost as this place had everything. GF food for Jen, and some lovely Spanish beers that I bought.
As I thought we were going out for lunch, we ended up buying stuff for tea and lunch and going back to our digs for a feed and short rest.
I did mention in a previous post that we love eating out, but when we are on the go all day we just love nothing more than kicking back in our digs with a few relaxing drinks.
Apparently the weather forecast for the next few days is just nothing but wet, so it was good to get out and about today. If it is as wet as is predicted then we might just wander a few shops under cover.
This has been my first day in quite a few that I have not succumbed to a custard tart or pastry and I feel great for it! I still had a few Spanish beers tonight, but as I've had a solid workout on the nearby hills tonight I am feeling much better. As I never know when my next bit of exercise will be, I just make the most of any opportunity to squeeze some in.
It struck us today that San Sebastián must be an absolutely brilliant place in Summer. This is clearly their low season, and we would both love to come back in the warmer months to see what it is like.
Just strolling the narrow streets we came across so many bars and cafes, and to see what it must be like in the warmer times is very enticing. Even today and tonight it was lively, but it must be nothing compared to the high season.
So what is on tomorrow? Who knows. We will wake up, look out the window and decide from there. We have made a conscious decision on this trip to not try and do everything that is on offer, but to do just what we feel like when we feel like it. Rather than being absorbed into visiting all of the tourist attractions, we just love wandering and seeing what life is really like in the places that we visit.
I know I have been slack at posting when I am back at work Readers, but I am still blown away by the number of overseas readers. How you stumbled across this blog is anybody's guess, but I hope you enjoy it, and I thank you for reading it.
Remember, you are free to add comments, they do not go on the blog, they only come to me.
Finally, I even managed to get my sock photos done today!
For any new readers, I was given a pair of special socks by a student from my school as a surprise ( but very much appreciated) for Christmas. I have a habit of wearing bright and different coloured and patterned socks to school, and this just adds to my collection. I promised this student that they would accompany me on this trip, so I try to get a shot of them every day. Plus, it gives this student an idea of different places in the world as I know that her family is following this blog. Greetings to the Eddy family!!
And San Sebastián is just as nice at night as it is by day..
And looking at the results for the past week on my blog I still seem to be holding on to my Readers from the USA. I'd just love to know who they might be or where they are from!!
Compared to the results since I started this blog, they are still the clubhouse leaders!!
So the point of this Readers is to encourage blogging, you just never know who might hook in to what you bang on about. Mine has no pattern or definition to it, they are just my ramblings.
Some people just seem to want to be bored by it!!
And finally, how could I not finish with my daily sock photos!!
This was taken at 10.30 this morning, we struggled to get into double digits all day.
Walking around the beach to the mountain in the background that had the funicular that was unfortunately closed.
It has been a great day Readers, so, until my next post...
Cheers!!
