Hi Readers,
Well today certainly started early!
As I never mentioned at all in my previous post, today we are leaving Lisbon and are off to San Sebastián in Spain. Another country and city that neither of us have been to before, so we are both fairly excited.
Our flight today is at 8.20 in the morning, meaning we have to be at the airport a few hours beforehand as it is an international flight. A short flight we know, but as we change countries we still have to go through all of the formalities.
It was up and at it at 4.30 this morning so that we could get to the airport in time, so at the moment we are now just chilling and waiting to board.
An interesting moment when I came through security though. Normally I get checked again as something usually beeps, or because I just look dodgy, who knows? There was a family behind me and when they went through the screening they took one of their boys (who looked to be about 10 at the most) and did swabs and a pat down of him. He got the all clear, but the look of fear on his face was a worry. His parents were fine, but this kid really looked worried by the ordeal, as I suspect any kid would.
As we wait in the departure lounge there are only a few seats to spare, and it really bugs me when I see people laying across 4 seats when others are forced to stand or find a seat elsewhere. I must be grumpy from getting up so early!!
Not much more to add at the moment, I'm sure I'll have photos and more news later tonight after we lob into Spain.
Well, since I started this post at the airport in Lisbon, we have managed to change countries.
We are now safely ensconced in a hotel in San Sebastián, Spain.
It was slightly comical at the airport when we left Lisbon. We went to our check in and departure gate, and as often happens, we had to hop on a bus to be taken to our plane. Imagine our surprise as the bus bypassed all of the usual jets that we are accustomed to and pulled up beside this two engine turbo prop plane that held all of 70 passengers. I'm not complaining at all as it looked very swish, and I read up on it once I got inside and it is one of the best turbo prop planes going around. Let me say that the flight was very comfortable and I'd never hesitate to go on one again.
Our plane, complete with a group of excited nuns who obviously hadn't flown much before.
Getting off the plane and onto the bus at Bilbao.
After about two hours we landed in Bilbao and after a little wait we jumped on a bus for a 2 hour ride to San Sebastián. This ride was beautiful through the mountains, but aft r we both had a little doze we were awoken by the buzzing sound of the bus tyres running over the ripple strips on the edge of the highway. The driver was veering all over the place, and when the speed signs were 80 she just kept going at her 100!! Her dodgy driving certainly kept us awake for the rest of the trip.
We soon lobbed into San Sebastián and after dropping off our gear we headed out looking for something for tea. This proved a little difficult as all the shops were shut!! We eventually found a little supermarket, but as one would expect, when most of the others were shut this charged exorbitant prices, but we had to get what we could.
One of the main peaks overlooking the city, our challenge tomorrow.
The river is so clean you can see the bottom and see fish everywhere.
A typical street where we are staying.
3.00 in the afternoon and it's getting cold, however we are not missing the hot conditions at home at the moment.
A typical street. We just wander around these soaking up the atmosphere.
We got lost and ended up at the beach!!
Looking out to sea.
Another of the many bridges that cross the river.
This is another conquest tomorrow!!
My pleasure and my pain. As I just have to have some exercise each day I found this steep hill near our digs that I run up and down for an hour. It also gets rid of those custard tarts that I have taken a liking to!!
An old bridge just near our digs.
I just liked this picture as it captures a man walking alone with his guitar. Maybe it was the moment that grabbed me.
Our digs on the left with the blue light.
The street where we are staying. Our hotel is rated 1 Star, but it is sensational!!!
The river at dusk.
Tomorrow we'll be heading to a GF shop that Jen has found. While we do like eating out, and we have done quite a bit so far, we really do like buying locally and bringing it back to cook in our rooms.
We did manage to get lost and instead of finding our hotel we ended up at the beach!! Oh well!!
After getting back to our digs with our eyes hanging out of our heads after such an early start, Jen cooked up some tea for herself while I fed my OCD and went and found a hill to run on. Talk about luck, I found a doozy and I think I got rid of those two custard tarts that they forced me to eat on the plane today!!
Tonight was another night of simple treats that might mean nothing to you Readers, but to us it was a treat. We have a washing machine in our rooms, so tonight we have washed a heap of clothes and now they are hanging all around our digs, making it look like a Chinese laundry. Clean clothes here we come!!
And once again I have neglected my sock photo for the day...SORRY!!!!
Maybe it was because we were fairly busy, but we just did not get to a place today that was what I call 'Sock Worthy'!!
Tomorrow I will definitely make it up!!
Well Readers, until my next post...
Cheers!!
